OGDENSBURG, New York (WWNY) - A giveaway of Thanksgiving food in Ogdensburg Wednesday morning drew twice the usual turnout.

Ogdensburg Catholic Charities distributed bags with turkeys and enough other Thanksgiving food to feed a family of five. Typically the giveaway draws about 80 people. This year, 178 people got bags.

Johanna Cubi, organizer of the event, said the high cost of Thanksgiving could be to blame for the increase in demand.

“Let’s say a turkey, if you want a turkey it’s $30, they range from $25-35 and that’s only the turkey. You’re also having to get stuffing, all the additives, all the pies and with our bags we have the full meal,” Cubi said.

The charity began distributing meal bags at 9 AM. They were out of turkeys by 9:20 AM.
