WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - Volunteers are needed for a 77-year old north country tradition.

December 1 is ‘Old Newsboys Day.’

Every year, volunteers set up shop at Watertown businesses like Walmart and Kinney Drugs to sell a special edition of the Watertown Daily Times.

All the proceeds go to the Salvation Army and its efforts to keep the north country community fed and warm.

Captain Dominic Nicoll says the volunteer effort could always use more volunteers.

Nicoll says this time of year is critical for the organization.

“Between the kettles, Old Newsboys Day, and everything else that comes in this time of year, this is when we’re able to do things that are going on behind me, like the Thanksgiving meal, and so much more. The Christmas season, holiday season, is truly when we need your help,” Nicoll said.

Old Newsboys Day is also taking place in Lewis County where organizers are looking for volunteers. Copies of the Journal and Republican will be handed out at Kinney Drugs in Lowville and by the Post Office.
